I have recently switched from using Word to using Word , and I've run into a problem. Here is the problem:. I am using the spell check to check spelling in a different language. I have my custom dictionary set up and for the most part it all works well. However many of the words have a glottal mark.

An apostrophe can be used for this, but that confuses the spell check. Therefore I have it set up to use another symbol. In most cases this does not make a problem. So when the spell check catches that word, I choose "Change All" to the correct spelling with the glottal. The spell check automatically changes all of them it comes to them until it runs across one that comes directly before some punctuation. After it adds that needed glottal it immediately closes its eyes to the glottal and sees that word again without a glottal.

So it ads another one, and then another. Zooooom, and it ends up with somewhere around 60 glottal marks on the end of the word before it finally gives up on considering it misspelled! Word worked fine with this issue of glottal marks before other punctuation. Is there some settings option I had set differently in Word or what is the difference that Word cannot understand this like Word did?

Was this reply helpful? Yes No. Sorry this didn't help. If the issue persists only with Spanish Words with Glottal marks, then you may also post your question in Spanish Language forum for Office mentioned to get suggestions from the users who use Word in Spanish language. I am familiar with changing the proofing language, and I have the proofing language set to Spanish.

I have also tried making up a word in English that ends with a glottal mark, then adding that to the custom English dictionary. It has the same problem. The problem is no better whether I am use Spanish or English, so obviously the proofing language is not the problem.

It seems to be something a little more complicated. Maybe it is some setting that I can change if I only knew where to look. Or maybe it is a change that was made in Word that I cannot adjust without knowing something about basic computer programming. This is the character that I use for a glottal mark. Assuming that you have the language set to English, and that you have the "red squiggly lines" option turned on, your spell check will underline this word as misspelled.

If you right click on the word and simply choose "Add to Dictionary" the word will get added to the custom dictionary without including the glottal mark. Therefore you need to instead select the whole word including the glottal mark and copy that to your clipboard. The glottal mark will probably appear as a box in that first blank, but after you click Add it will appear just like an apostrophe.

You now have this test word as an addition to your custom dictionary so click on all the OK's until you get back to your document. The "red squiggly line" will now be gone. You can type the same word again, and it will make no problem. But now type the same word followed by a period or just about any other type of punctuation.

The red squiggly line reappears. Run a spell check of the document. The spell check will instantaneously change the word then ignore the glottal, change the word, ignore the glottal, etc. As long as this word "paltoc'" never comes directly before a punctuation mark, the spell check deals with it fine. But a story will include some places where it is directly followed by a punctuation mark.

In the language I am working with, there are many other words that end with a glottal mark Latin Small Letter Saltillo and any one of them has the same problem when it comes directly before a punctuation mark. You can try adding other words that end with a glottal mark to the custom dictionary.

Any word that ends in a glottal mark will act this way. Concerning steps I have taken to make changes to the dictionary.

I simply began with a. I added that as a custom dictionary under "Spanish Guatemala ". I have also added other smaller custom dictionaries under "Spanish Guatemala " where I store my own word additions to that language.

I simply need to check the spelling in "Spanish Guatemala " and that "deploys" all my other language. I hope that with this information you can recreate and better understand the problem. In reply to JairOV's post on August 29, I checked those settings and changed them to match your screen shot. I also tried changing them to match my other computer with Word that handles this issue fine.

Since the spell check for my language is a custom dictionary for Spanish Guatemala the grammar settings are also for Spanish. I tried making adjustments in my document to the Spanish grammar settings, and I also tried making changes to the English grammar settings in Normal. None of that seemed to make any difference for my problem.
